OpenAI and Anthropic have separately announced the creation of new joint ventures, partnering with prominent private equity and investment firms to speed the integration of their artificial intelligence services into enterprise operations. These initiatives mark a significant strategic push by both leading AI companies to capture a larger share of the business market.
OpenAI is establishing "The Deployment Company," a Delaware-domiciled joint venture valued at $10 billion pre-money valuation. The venture has secured over $4 billion in funding from 19 investors, including TPG, Brookfield Asset Management, Advent International, and Bain Capital. OpenAI itself plans to commit up to $1.5 billion to this entity. The Deployment Company aims to serve as a captive distribution channel for OpenAI's enterprise products, working directly with the portfolio companies of its private equity partners. This strategy allows OpenAI to bypass individual negotiations with businesses and gain systematic access to corporate networks. The venture offers investors a guaranteed annual return of 17.5% over five years, along with seniority and downside protection. OpenAI will retain majority ownership and control through super-voting shares. The company's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, is leading this initiative, reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman.
Anthropic is pursuing a similar strategy, forming a new, independent enterprise AI services company in partnership with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs. This venture, which has not yet been officially named, is backed by a consortium of alternative asset managers including General Atlantic, Leonard Green, Apollo Global Management, GIC, and Sequoia Capital. The stated goal is to address a key bottleneck in enterprise AI adoption: the shortage of skilled personnel capable of integrating advanced AI models into complex business workflows. Anthropic will embed its engineering and partnership resources directly within the new firm, which will deploy engineers to work on-site with client companies. Unlike OpenAI's venture, Anthropic's partnership involves common equity without guaranteed returns or special protections for investors. Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman are each expected to invest approximately $300 million, while Goldman Sachs is contributing about $150 million, totaling $1.5 billion in initial funding.
Both OpenAI and Anthropic are strategically targeting private equity firms due to their extensive control over numerous enterprise companies and their influence on corporate technology spending. This approach allows the AI developers to accelerate the adoption of their technologies across a broad base of mid-sized and large businesses. OpenAI's partners, for instance, have access to over 2,000 portfolio companies and clients. Krishna Rao, Chief Financial Officer of Anthropic, stated that enterprise demand for Claude is "significantly outpacing any single delivery model" and that these partnerships are central to reaching large enterprises.
These moves come as both OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly positioning themselves for potential public listings later this year. The intensified competition in the enterprise AI sector is also evident as companies like Meta Platforms navigate their own workforce strategies in light of AI advancements. The success of these ventures may depend on their ability to effectively bridge the gap between advanced AI capabilities and practical, scaled implementation within diverse business environments. OpenAI's venture is expected to close funding in early May 2026, with operations to follow shortly thereafter.
The primary focus for these new entities will be to move beyond simply selling software access.
