Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, has increased usage limits for its Claude Code product, a move it attributes to a new computing resources agreement with SpaceX. The company announced on May 6, 2026, that the five-hour rate limits for Claude Code have been doubled for users on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Additionally, peak hour restrictions for Claude Code have been removed for Pro and Max accounts.
The expanded capacity stems from a partnership with SpaceX to utilize the entirety of the Colossus 1 data center. This facility provides over 300 megawatts of new capacity, housing more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs. Anthropic stated that this influx of computing power will directly enhance the capacity available to Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers.
This deal with SpaceX is the latest in a series of significant compute infrastructure agreements for Anthropic. The company has previously announced arrangements with Amazon, involving up to 5 gigawatts of capacity with nearly 1 gigawatt expected by the end of 2026. Anthropic also has a 5-gigawatt agreement with Google and Broadcom, scheduled to begin in 2027, and a strategic partnership with Microsoft and NVIDIA that includes $30 billion of Azure capacity. The company is also participating in a $50 billion investment in American AI infrastructure with Fluidstack.
Beyond the immediate increase in compute, Anthropic has also expressed interest in collaborating with SpaceX on developing orbital AI compute capacity. This concept involves deploying computing systems in space to overcome terrestrial limitations such as power availability and land constraints. SpaceX's launch capabilities and experience with satellite constellations position it to pursue such orbital infrastructure.
The increased API rate limits for Claude Opus models were also cited as a benefit of the new compute arrangements. These changes aim to improve the experience for dedicated users of Claude, particularly those engaged in coding and development tasks. Ami Vora, chief product officer at Anthropic, noted that API volume on the cloud platform has increased nearly 17 times year over year, with average developers spending approximately 20 hours per week using Claude Code.
The partnership with SpaceX is notable given past public remarks by Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, who had previously criticized Anthropic and its CEO, Dario Amodei. However, Musk has also indicated an interest in the company's work, stating in a social media post that he was "impressed" with the Anthropic team. The agreement also involves SpaceX's affiliated AI company, xAI, which develops the Grok AI model.
The Colossus 1 data center is described as one of the world's largest and fastest-deployed AI supercomputers, featuring over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators. This infrastructure is designed for high-intensity workloads such as AI model training, fine-tuning, and inference.
