A cross-industry coalition, including technology giants like Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Salesforce, has launched the Blueprint Alliance. This group aims to establish a unified approach for governing and securing artificial intelligence agents within enterprise environments. The alliance's primary objective is to address growing concerns over the proliferation of autonomous AI agents, which can operate across various business systems, data platforms, and infrastructure.
The Blueprint Alliance's proposed framework centers on treating every AI agent as a distinct identity with access strictly scoped to specific tasks, rather than granting broad, standing privileges. This approach emphasizes traceable delegation, continuous monitoring of agent behavior, and the ability to quickly contain or restore agents if risks emerge. A key recommendation is the implementation of a "kill switch" capability, which would allow for the immediate termination of suspicious agent activity. This mechanism, often facilitated through OAuth tokens, would enable businesses to rapidly disable agents that exhibit anomalous or potentially harmful actions.
Gartner forecasts that by 2028, the average global Fortune 500 company could have over 150,000 AI agents in use. However, only about 13% of organizations believe they currently possess adequate governance for these agents. The Blueprint Alliance seeks to bridge this gap by providing an open, multi-vendor reference architecture. This architecture expands upon Okta's earlier "blueprint for the secure agentic enterprise," first introduced in March 2026.
The alliance's framework addresses four core questions for businesses deploying AI agents: where agents are located, what they are permitted to do, what they are currently doing, and how the organization should respond when issues arise. The initiative also focuses on improving interoperability between different vendors' security products. It encourages the sharing of threat and activity signals using open standards, enabling alerts in one system to trigger actions in others. Strategic advisors, including GE Appliances and World Central Kitchen, are also involved in refining the blueprint to address real-world challenges.
