This undertaking represents a substantial overhaul of federal scientific funding, described by the White House as the largest marshalling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program. The Department of Energy (DOE) leads the initiative, utilizing its American Science and Security Platform to connect researchers with data, computing power, and AI tools. Agencies participating include the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Defense (DoD).
The Genesis Mission seeks to double America's scientific productivity by integrating AI into research workflows. The initiative received a significant response, with more than 5,000 applications submitted for the 278 awards. The largest single award announced is $60 million over three years for the "Prometheus" project, which will use AI to aid in the design, licensing, manufacturing, and operation of nuclear reactors. This project involves a collaboration between multiple national laboratories and over 20 industry partners.
HHS, under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., plans to focus on biomedical research, particularly chronic diseases, and accelerate drug discovery. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will contribute to projects aimed at understanding chronic disease causes and developing new treatments. NASA's participation will focus on advancing AI tools to accelerate space exploration and enhance understanding of the planet and the universe.
Kratsios released a companion report titled "Science: A New Golden Age," which outlines a vision for renewing the American scientific enterprise. This report suggests a shift toward AI-powered research and a potential restructuring of the grant process, moving towards a venture capital-like model. The strategy emphasizes mission-driven innovation and modernizing how federal research is funded and conducted, rather than solely increasing spending.
The Genesis Mission platform provides researchers access to AI models, simulation agents, and datasets from national laboratories. The DOE has also launched a $293 million funding opportunity for interdisciplinary teams from national labs, private companies, and academia.
