Google indexed shared conversations and "Artifacts" created by Anthropic's Claude AI, exposing potentially private user data through public search results. The issue arose because Claude's "share chat" feature generates public links that search engines, including Google, can index. Users discovered that a simple Google search query, such as "site:claude.ai/share," could surface these conversations, some of which contained sensitive personal and company information.
The exposed content reportedly included detailed medical reports, clinical trial results with patient names, internal company documents, employee reviews, and information about children. Claude Artifacts, a feature allowing users to save projects as standalone applications or tools, were also found to be indexed. While Claude's "share chat" feature warns users that links are public and viewable by anyone with the URL, it did not explicitly state that these links could be indexed by search engines. Similarly, the "publish Artifact" feature does warn users that published items may be visible in search engine results.
Anthropic stated that it does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines and that these shareable links are not "guessable or discoverable" unless users share them. The company maintains that shared conversations are "publicly accessible" and, like other public web content, may be archived by third-party services. However, reports indicate that some conversations may not have included "noindex" tags, which instruct search engines not to index a page.
The problem was first identified by users on Reddit, leading to widespread discussion on social media platforms like X. Many users expressed concern over the privacy implications, especially given that previous incidents of AI-generated content being indexed by search engines have occurred with other platforms, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's own Bard (now Gemini).
By Sunday morning, many of the affected Google search results appeared to have been removed or become harder to find, suggesting action had been taken by Google, Anthropic, or the users who created the links. Anthropic has since stated that the system is working as intended, but also that it does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines. The company also indicated that it blocks search engine crawlers from its site.
Users who wish to ensure their shared conversations are not publicly indexed can manage their shared chats through Claude's settings. By navigating to Settings, then Privacy, and selecting Shared Chats, users can review and disable active sharing links. Avoiding the use of the "share" button and instead opting to copy and paste text into secure documents is recommended for sharing sensitive information.
