Stability AI has closed a $76 million Series B funding round, bringing its total capital raised under CEO Prem Akkaraju to $232 million. The investment saw participation from major entertainment companies including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Electronic Arts. This round marks the first time all three major music labels have invested equity in the same artificial intelligence company.
The funding will support the development of Stability AI's product suite for creative production, enhance its applied research capabilities, and expand its professional services arm. The company, known for its image generation model Stable Diffusion, focuses on developing AI products for professional creatives in music, gaming, and entertainment. Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group had existing strategic partnerships with Stability AI prior to this investment, while Sony Music Group is a new investor.
The composition of the investor group signals a strategic alignment between rights holders and AI development. This move represents a shift for the music industry, which has previously engaged in litigation and licensing discussions with generative AI companies over training data. The investment suggests a move from defensive legal postures to direct participation in AI infrastructure. Electronic Arts' involvement further extends this strategy into the gaming sector.
Existing investors also participated in the Series B round, including Coatue, Greycroft, Kadmos Capital, Sean Parker, and Eric Schmidt, who are investing for the second consecutive round. Other returning backers include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mantis Capital, Sound Ventures, and WPP.
Stability AI's CEO, Prem Akkaraju, stated that the investor group affirms the company's vision of generative AI empowering creators. He emphasized Stability AI's unique position as a company founded by creatives for creatives. The company's strategy involves building creative tools in collaboration with artists, studios, and rights holders.
The announcement coincides with the launch of Stable Audio 3.0, a new family of music models trained on licensed data. This offering is accessible through a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) plugin and directly on the Stable Audio platform, integrating into professional creative workflows. The AI Platforms market, within which Stability AI operates, is projected to reach $496.9 billion by 2030.
