Spotify will begin labeling artist profiles that appear to be AI-generated personas, according to an announcement made by the music streaming service on Tuesday. The new "AI Persona" badge is intended to inform listeners when an artist's public identity, including their name and imagery, may be artificial rather than a real person. This initiative aims to foster greater transparency and trust within the Spotify platform.
Starting mid-September, the AI Persona badge will be visible on relevant artist profiles, in search results, and alongside tracks in playlists. Listeners will be able to tap the badge to understand whether the artist disclosed the AI identity themselves or if Spotify applied the label after a review. Artists can now begin self-identifying their profiles as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists. Spotify also stated it would review artist profiles using both human reviewers and "AI investigative tools" to identify and apply the badge to profiles that appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated individuals. The initial reviews will focus on artists that meet certain audience thresholds, with the goal of covering most artist profiles encountered by listeners.
A significant consequence of this labeling is that music from AI Persona profiles will be excluded by default from Spotify's editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendations. While listeners can still access this music by choosing to follow the artists, it will not be surfaced in discovery feeds based on algorithmic performance. Spotify stated that its programming focus is on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in the industry, implying that AI personas will not receive the same default promotional lift. The company clarified that this policy concerns the identity presented by an artist, not the use of AI in the music creation process itself. Spotify already offers an "AI Credits" system, allowing artists to disclose how AI contributed to a track's creation.
This move is part of Spotify's broader "Artist Identity & Trust" efforts. These efforts include features like "Verified by Spotify," "Artist Details," and "Artist Profile Protection." The company's "Verified" badge is reserved for profiles that demonstrate sustained listener activity, policy compliance, and clear signals of a real-world artist presence. Profiles primarily representing AI-generated personas are not eligible for this verification. Spotify previously announced in September 2025 that it had removed over 75 million "spammy" tracks in the preceding year as part of new rules against impersonation and AI-enabled fraud. At that time, the company also committed to supporting a new DDEX standard for AI disclosures in music credits. In April, Spotify began displaying AI Credits in Song Credits, detailing AI usage when shared by artists or distributors.
The company's stated goal is to make Spotify "the most transparent and trustworthy place to listen to music." This initiative appears to be a response to listener feedback, as Spotify noted that listeners have expressed dissatisfaction upon discovering that an artist persona they engaged with was AI-generated.
