Slack has launched Slack Code, a new feature that establishes dedicated channels for teams to collaborate with AI coding agents on software development projects. The aim is to consolidate coding tasks within the Slack platform, enhancing visibility and collaboration for all team members.
The functionality allows users to tag an AI coding agent, such as Anthropic's Claude Code, Cognition's Devin, GitHub Copilot, or Vercel Agent, directly within a conversation. Upon being tagged, the agent initiates a project-specific "code channel." These channels are designed to be open, with distinct tabs for conversation, planning, code differences (diffs), and live previews of HTML output. This structure enables team members, including those without technical expertise, to observe the coding process, provide feedback, and approve the work before it is finalized. Code reviews, traditionally conducted in separate tools, are now integrated into the shared channel, offering a transparent view of changes.
When a task is completed, the code channel automatically archives itself, with the entire history preserved as an audit log. Slack Code is available on all Slack plans, including free workspaces. However, access to the individual AI agents is a separate arrangement that users must make.
The introduction of Slack Code aligns with Salesforce's broader strategy to position Slack as a central hub for AI-driven work. This move addresses the growing trend of "vibe coding," where users describe software needs in natural language and AI agents generate the code. By integrating this capability directly into Slack, the company seeks to prevent the fragmentation of work across multiple tools and to foster a more collaborative environment for human-agent partnerships.
Slack Code is launching with several founding partners, including Anthropic, Cognition, GitHub, and Vercel. The platform's APIs for code channels are slated to be opened to the wider developer community, allowing for the creation of custom agents. Beyond software development, Slack suggests potential applications for marketing teams building campaigns or legal departments reviewing documents.
The feature also includes enhancements to direct messages with AI agents, featuring clearer labels and titled threads. A new "Agents" tab aggregates all AI sessions, allowing users to monitor status, name conversations, and halt agents mid-task. Furthermore, Slack has streamlined the process for organizations to integrate third-party agents through an "Add to Slack" flow, reducing the need for manual configuration. For high-risk actions, such as deploying code to production, channel experts will be required to provide approval, leveraging Slack's existing security model.
The development of Slack Code builds on over a year of agent infrastructure development by Slack and its parent company, Salesforce. In December 2025, Anthropic introduced a research preview for Claude Code, enabling developers to delegate tasks directly from Slack threads. This initiative was presented as a step toward realizing Slack as "the future of work, where humans and AI agents partner in real time." The company has also expanded its agent capabilities with the general availability of the Slackbot MCP Client, which connects Slackbot to the Salesforce platform and over 20 partner applications.
