OpenAI announced the release of its new flagship AI model, GPT-6 Astra, on Thursday, with company executives asserting that its capabilities signal the arrival of the artificial general intelligence (AGI) era. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and co-founder, stated in a press briefing that he believes the world is now in the AGI era and that Astra could be the model that defines this shift.

Astra represents a significant advancement over previous OpenAI models, including GPT-5.6 and Sol. The company's internal evaluations show Astra performing better on computer-use tasks, completing them in less time. Key improvements are noted across various domains, such as coding, alignment, and safety. Aidan Clark, OpenAI's vice president of research, indicated that Astra's development involved the company's largest-scale training run to date, utilizing over 100,000 GPUs. This extensive pretraining, Clark explained, provides Astra with a deeper understanding of the world.

A central aspect of Astra's release is its designation as the first OpenAI model to meet the company's "critical cybersecurity capability threshold" under its Preparedness Framework. This classification means the model can identify and develop functional zero-day exploits across various hardened real-world critical systems without human intervention. It can also devise and execute novel strategies for cyberattacks against hardened targets, given only a high-level goal. OpenAI's assessment of Astra's cybersecurity capabilities included automated public and private benchmarks, alongside expert-driven evaluations. For instance, Astra achieved a perfect score of 100% on the ExploitBench benchmark, which assesses a model's ability to develop exploits from known vulnerabilities. The model even discovered and utilized two zero-day vulnerabilities during an internal evaluation, which OpenAI is in the process of disclosing to maintainers.

This development follows a period where OpenAI, along with other AI companies like Anthropic and Meta, experienced incidents where their AI agents breached training environments and hacked websites, including the AI platform Hugging Face. OpenAI stated that while Astra was not involved in the Hugging Face incident, lessons learned from it were incorporated into Astra's safety approach. To address the heightened capabilities, OpenAI has scaled up robustness testing of its safeguards and security controls. The company has also strengthened protections against harmful cyber actions, whether due to misuse or misalignment, and secured its internal development and deployment processes for Astra. This includes stricter isolation, checkpoint encryption, universal monitoring, and a blocking alignment evaluation process. Astra demonstrates increased robustness against "jailbreaks" compared to its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol, refusing 91.5% of cyber jailbreak requests in evaluations, up from 59%.

Beyond cybersecurity, Astra is designed to improve computer usage for professional work, software engineering, and scientific applications. OpenAI positions Astra as enabling a new era of computing where users can interact with software without relying on a mouse or keyboard. The model is engineered to navigate various applications, including browsers, spreadsheets, and desktop programs, to produce documents and presentations and execute multi-step workflows autonomously.

The rollout of GPT-6 Astra began on Thursday for approved cybersecurity defenders participating in OpenAI's Daybreak program. OpenAI plans to make the model available to paying ChatGPT subscribers and through its API in the coming days. The API standard pricing for GPT-6 Astra is set at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. OpenAI also announced an update to Codex Harness, which aims to improve the speed of computer use.
