OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, an artificial intelligence model intended to perform computer-based tasks with greater speed and efficiency. The model combines visual reasoning capabilities with precise computer use and natural language generation, representing an advancement over the previous GPT-5.6 Terra.
GPT-6.1 Terra is positioned as a cost-effective option for a range of professional applications. OpenAI stated that its standard API prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, making it suitable for automating high-volume tasks such as processing invoices and data entry. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, users will find that their existing usage allowances extend further with GPT-6.1 Terra compared to GPT-5.6 Terra, and substantially more than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
The model demonstrates improved performance on benchmarks for professional tasks. On the Agents' Last Exam evaluation, which assesses how well AI agents utilize software for work, GPT-6.1 Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at approximately one-third the cost. OpenAI also reported that GPT-6.1 Terra performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token and completes tasks over three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. For complex coding and intensive reasoning, OpenAI recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, as these models continue to offer superior performance for the most demanding tasks.
GPT-6.1 Terra is available to all Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users within ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can access the model through the OpenAI API using the identifier `gpt-6.1-terra`. The model supports various reasoning efforts, from low to max, allowing users to adjust the level of processing based on task complexity. OpenAI also highlighted that GPT-6.1 Terra incorporates the alignment improvements of the GPT-6 series, showing increased resistance to prompt injection and a greater likelihood to disclose limitations.
