Meta Platforms has released a standalone Meta AI desktop application for Mac, marking an expansion of its artificial intelligence assistant into a productivity tool for businesses and creators. The app, launched as a version 1.0 beta, provides Mac-specific functionalities that aim to streamline workflows and offer context-aware assistance.

One of the primary features of the new Mac app is its ability to share a portion of the user's screen with the AI assistant. This allows Meta AI to "see" what a user is working on, enabling it to provide more specific answers, generate content, or offer suggestions based on the on-screen context. Meta states this feature is particularly beneficial for businesses seeking guidance on crafting posts, advertisements, and other content.

Beyond screen sharing, the Meta AI Mac app includes system-wide dictation. Users can hold a keyboard shortcut, speak, and have the transcribed words appear in any application, from email clients to code editors. Another Mac-specific integration is "Quick Invoke," which uses the Option-Space shortcut to bring up a compact Meta AI composer over the active window. The app is a native build for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later, weighing approximately 16MB.

The launch of the Mac app coincides with broader enhancements to Meta AI's capabilities, particularly for professional users. The assistant can now connect directly to Instagram professional accounts, Meta Ads Manager, and Google Workspace. This integration allows Meta AI to access a business's own data, such as account engagement and ad performance, to provide tailored advice and generate reports. For instance, a business can ask Meta AI to analyze content performance on Instagram and suggest future posting strategies.

The Google Workspace connection extends Meta AI's reach into business emails, calendars, and documents. Users can leverage this to combine information from their Google Workspace with insights from Meta's platforms, potentially automating tasks like generating weekly performance reports or creating presentation decks.

Meta's Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox, previously focused engineering efforts on social connection, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg has since shifted the company's strategy towards developing AI agents capable of managing entire businesses. This Mac app release is part of a series of AI advancements from Meta, including the replacement of Llama with Muse Spark in April and subsequent updates that introduced more natural voice conversations and live camera-based assistance.

While the new Mac app is free to use, Meta has indicated that more advanced AI features may be subject to rate limits, potentially requiring a Meta One subscription for increased usage. The company has also stated that data shared with the assistant, including content from Google Workspace, may be used for AI training and ad targeting, a point privacy-conscious users may consider.

The Meta AI Mac app joins a growing number of AI applications available for the macOS platform. The company aims to position Meta AI as a productivity-focused assistant, directly competing with established AI rivals such as Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, and Anthropic Claude, many of which already offer desktop applications.
