Google announced on Monday the launch of Googlebook, a new line of premium laptops built around its Gemini AI tools, with pre-orders beginning immediately. These devices, which start at $899, are intended to provide Android users with a computing experience that integrates tightly with their mobile phones, mirroring the ecosystem synergy seen with Apple's MacBook and iPhone. The first Googlebook models will ship on October 4 in the U.S. and October 5 in the U.K., Canada, and other European countries.
The Googlebook platform combines elements of Android and ChromeOS, previously referred to as "Aluminium OS." This hybrid operating system is designed to offer native Android app support, optimized multitasking, and a suite of AI-powered features. Key among these is "Magic Pointer," which allows users to interact with Gemini by simply wiggling their cursor, enabling contextual suggestions and task automation directly on the screen. For example, users can point at a date in an email to schedule a meeting or select images to visualize them together. Another feature, "Rambler," aims to transform spoken notes into organized text, while "Create My Widget" allows users to build custom desktop widgets using natural language prompts. Googlebook also includes "Gemini Live," enabling voice conversations with Gemini without typing.
Hardware for the initial Googlebook lineup will feature powerful processors such as Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, with all models including at least 16GB of RAM and SSD storage. Manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are producing the first wave of devices. These laptops will utilize premium materials like aluminum, magnesium, and carbon fiber, and most will feature OLED touchscreens. A distinctive "Glowbar" on the lid will indicate battery life and charging status.
The Googlebook is designed for enhanced device continuity with Android phones. Features such as "Cast My Apps" allow users to open phone applications directly on the laptop, and "Continue On" enables seamless task handoff between devices. Users can also access phone files and photos directly from the laptop's file browser. Each Googlebook purchase includes a 12-month subscription to Google AI Pro, which provides access to advanced Gemini tools and 5TB of cloud storage. Additionally, buyers receive a year of GeForce Now game streaming and three months each of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. Google has committed to providing OS updates for Googlebooks for up to 10 years.
