Ford has begun rolling out an AI-powered assistant to its FordPass and Lincoln Way mobile applications, offering vehicle owners access to real-time data and detailed information about their cars. The assistant, which functions as a chatbot, can answer questions ranging from current fuel levels and tire pressure to towing capabilities and cargo capacity. This deployment marks an initial phase, with Ford planning to integrate a voice-activated version directly into vehicles by 2027.

The AI assistant is designed to be a personalized resource for Ford and Lincoln owners. Because the app is linked to a customer's specific vehicle identification number (VIN), the assistant has access to the precise model, trim level, and equipment details. This allows it to provide tailored answers regarding technical capabilities, maintenance schedules, and operational guidance for specific onboard systems like BlueCruise hands-free driving or Pro Trailer Backup Assist.

One of the assistant's key features is its ability to access live diagnostic data. Owners can query the app for their oil life, tire pressure, and current fuel or battery charge. It can also calculate the estimated highway range based on the current state of charge. Ford highlighted an example where owners could take a photo of cargo, such as bags of mulch, and ask the AI assistant how much would fit in their truck bed. The assistant then analyzes the image, estimates the volume, and provides a precise answer based on the truck's exact bed length and configuration.

Ford's strategy involves an "app-first" approach, making the AI assistant available to millions of existing customers through their mobile devices. This allows the company to gather real-world usage data and refine the assistant's responses and reliability before embedding it into vehicle infotainment systems. The in-vehicle integration is expected to debut in 2027, with the Fathom electric truck on Ford's Universal EV Platform being one of the first to receive it.

The AI assistant is hosted on Google Cloud and utilizes large language models, providing a conversational interface for users. While the in-app assistant focuses on vehicle-specific inquiries, Ford is also upgrading its in-cabin infotainment architecture. For models with the latest Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience, Google Gemini will be an opt-in alternative to Google Assistant for general productivity and media management. This two-pronged approach separates general voice assistant functions from the vehicle-specific intelligence provided by Ford's own AI.

The development of this AI assistant is part of a broader industry trend, with other automakers also incorporating AI features into their vehicles. General Motors has integrated Google Gemini into some of its vehicles and is developing its own assistant. Rivian and Mercedes-Benz have also introduced their own AI integrations. Ford aims to leverage its scale, with up to eight million app users, to test and improve its AI assistant before its full in-vehicle rollout.

Ford previously stated its intention to develop an AI system independent of any specific chatbot, allowing it to work with various large language models. The company's goal is to create a seamless experience that connects the AI assistant to its broader technology stack, including features like Apple Maps for EV route planning, BlueCruise hands-free driving, and bidirectional charging.
