Google Chrome has introduced an update to its autofill feature, enabling it to pull information directly from users' Gmail inboxes. This new capability, powered by Gemini with Personal Intelligence, aims to streamline the form-filling process by automatically suggesting details such as order numbers, tracking information, and flight bookings. The feature is rolling out to users in the United States on desktop, Android, and iOS devices.
This enhancement builds upon Chrome's existing autofill functions, which typically handle static data like addresses, passwords, and payment cards. The integration with Gmail allows Chrome to access and suggest dynamic information found within emails, eliminating the need for users to manually search their inboxes for confirmation emails or shipping updates. For example, when checking in for a flight, Chrome can now automatically populate the booking code directly from the confirmation email.
The feature requires users to have Gemini in Chrome with Personal Intelligence enabled, a setting that allows Gemini to access connected Google apps like Gmail. Google states that sensitive data accessed through this feature is encrypted, and users retain control over what information is shared. Users can manage these settings within Chrome, choosing to enable or disable enhanced autofill entirely, or remove individual suggestions.
Google first tested a similar capability in July under the name "Find and Fill with Gemini," which had the potential to draw from Google Photos and other connected applications. The current public release is focused solely on Gmail as the data source. The company has not yet announced plans for expansion to other regions or the inclusion of additional data sources.
While the feature offers convenience, it also raises privacy considerations. Google's updated privacy policy for Gmail data indicates that while personalized ads are not based on Gmail content, this can change if users opt to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads. For users concerned about their data, the option to disable enhanced autofill or disconnect Gmail access within Gemini's settings remains available.
