Amazon has officially renamed its Kindle Unlimited subscription service to Kindle+. The change, effective October 22, 2026, includes an expanded library of audiobooks, notably incorporating titles narrated by artificial intelligence. The monthly subscription fee remains $11.99, with users still able to borrow up to 20 titles at a time from the Kindle app or devices.
The integration of AI-narrated audiobooks is facilitated by Amazon's free Virtual Voice service, available to authors through the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform. This service allows authors to create audiobook versions of their works using AI at no additional cost. These AI-narrated titles will coexist with human-narrated audiobooks, including those produced via Audible's Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX). Amazon began testing AI-powered dubbing for its Prime Video content earlier in 2026, suggesting a broader company initiative in AI-driven media.
While the core reading experience and borrowing limits remain the same, the expansion of the audiobook catalog is the primary functional change for subscribers. For authors participating in KDP Select, the inclusion of eligible audiobooks in Kindle+ offers a new avenue for reach, though questions about exclusivity and earnings remain. The service is currently available in multiple international markets where Kindle Unlimited was previously offered.
Some users have expressed concern that the rebrand and expanded offerings might signal future price increases, despite Amazon's current stance of maintaining the $11.99 monthly cost. The transition from Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ is largely a name change, with existing reading history, bookmarks, and saved titles carrying over to the new service.
