1Password announced its new 1Password for Agents platform on October 22, 2026, designed to allow personal AI agents to perform tasks requiring account access without exposing user credentials. This initiative aims to address the security risks associated with AI agents needing to log into various online services.
The new feature functions by mediating login requests from supported AI agents. When an agent encounters a sign-in form, it authenticates itself to 1Password using a unique digital key. The user then receives a notification on their device, detailing which account the agent requests access to and the reason for the request. Upon user approval, 1Password directly autofills the login credentials into the website's form, preventing the AI agent from ever seeing or storing the password or one-time code. Once the login is complete, 1Password removes the credential from the agent's context.
Aashish Tripathi, Chief Product Officer at 1Password, stated that the traditional method of handing over credentials to agents is not sustainable. He emphasized that an agent should complete its assigned task without gaining permanent access to all information within an account. This approach ensures that while agents can perform delegated work, user control over sensitive information is maintained.
The initial rollout of 1Password for Agents supports integrations with Meta's Muse and SpaceXSI's Grok Bot, with more assistants like Anthropic's Claude Duet, OpenAI's ChatGPT Work and Dots, and Townie expected to follow. 1Password's announcement clarifies that connecting an agent does not grant it access to a user's entire password vault. Access is granted on a per-task, user-approved basis, with safeguards and controls varying by integration. This builds on 1Password's previous work, including an integration with Claude announced in July 2026, which allowed Claude to access credentials without the data reaching the model or Anthropic's systems.
The company indicated that 1Password for Agents is available at no additional cost for eligible Individual and Family accounts on 1Password.com. Accounts on 1Password.eu or 1Password.ca are not currently supported. The development of this platform reflects a broader industry trend toward securing interactions between users and increasingly capable AI agents, which are now taking on tasks such as planning vacations, managing bills, and preparing expense reports.
